The Product Design Technician – Level I supports product development by creating, modifying, and maintaining accurate engineering drawings, 3D CAD models, and product specifications in compliance with Cummins, industry, national, and international standards. The role contributes to product quality, configuration management, and engineering change processes while supporting the delivery of Right First Time (RFT) and On-Time Delivery (OTD) outcomes. Working under general supervision, the incumbent collaborates with cross-functional teams to develop high-quality design documentation and continuously builds technical capability through structured training and on-the-job experience.
Key Responsibilities
Create, modify, and maintain 3D CAD models, engineering drawings, and product specifications using approved CAD tools and engineering standards.
Ensure model and drawing quality by applying Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and established design practices.
Develop complete product specifications, including engineering bills of materials (BOMs), drawings, and associated documentation.
Utilize CAD data management and Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems to manage configuration control, document security, version control, and engineering change activities.
Support product configuration and change management processes by processing engineering work requests and maintaining accurate product documentation throughout the product lifecycle.
Apply Cummins, industry, national, and international engineering standards to ensure product quality, manufacturability, and compliance.
Participate in drawing quality reviews, design reviews, and continuous improvement initiatives to enhance engineering documentation and design processes.
Collaborate with engineering, manufacturing, quality, and other cross-functional teams to resolve design issues and support product development activities.

Qualifications
High school diploma, certificate of completion of secondary education, or equivalent experience in a relevant STEM field is required.
Associate degree, Diploma, or equivalent technical qualification in Mechanical Engineering, Product Design, or a related discipline is preferred, based on regional requirements.
Participation in or completion of a recognized apprenticeship or technical training program is preferred.
This position may require licensing or compliance with applicable export control or sanctions regulations.
Skills and Experience Needed
Some experience or foundational knowledge in mechanical design, CAD modeling, engineering drafting, or product design gained through education, internships, apprenticeships, vocational training, or professional experience.
Proficiency in Creo or similar CAD software for creating and modifying 3D models and engineering drawings.
Basic understanding of mechanical systems, engineering drawings, and product design principles.
Working knowledge of Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and engineering drawing standards.
Familiarity with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) systems such as Windchill and engineering configuration management processes is preferred.
Understanding of engineering change management, product specifications, and engineering documentation practices.
Ability to interpret engineering requirements and collaborate effectively with cross-functional engineering, manufacturing, and quality teams.
Strong analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills with excellent attention to detail.
Ability to manage multiple assignments while meeting quality and delivery expectations.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and engineering documentation tools is preferred.
Strong written and verbal communication skills with a willingness to learn and continuously develop technical expertise.
