Job Title : Project Technical Assistant/Project Research Assistant (Industrial Design) Department : Design Reports To : Manager, design Role Summary:The industrial designer is typically focused on the user experience, desirability, physicalappearance, functionality, and manufacturability of a product, though they are ofteninvolved in far more during the development cycle. The designer brings specializedcompetencies to an interdisciplinary team as they attempt to find solutions for problemsof form, function, usability, physical ergonomics, marketing and brand development,sustainability, and sales.
Responsibilities
- Responsible for defining overall product direction including form development, ergonomics, usability, material selection, finishes, color schemes, branding language, and graphical user interfaces.
- Support the product development team through clear visual communication across all phases, including ideation, concept development, design reviews, and final detailing.
- Act as a synthesizer within the multidisciplinary team by combining inputs from engineering, clinical users, manufacturing, and business stakeholders into unified and workable design solutions.
- Develop early-stage design concepts using sketching, visual storytelling, CAD modeling, and physical prototypes to explore multiple design directions quickly.
- Create and use design probes (early concepts or prototypes) to test ideas, gather feedback, and refine product direction before final development.
- Conduct and support user research activities to gather end-user insights and translate them into design inputs for concept generation and usability validation.
- Actively participate in strategic product discussions and planning to influence overall product direction, features, and development priorities.
- Monitor global trends in industrial design, materials, colors, finishes, and emerging technologies to ensure competitive and market-relevant product concepts.
- Manage and execute multiple design projects simultaneously while ensuring high standards of design quality, usability, and manufacturability.
- Provide support for basic UI/UX considerations where applicable, particularly for medical device interfaces and user interaction elements.
- Participate in internal workshops, technical forums, and knowledge-sharing activities
- Participate in design reviews, technical discussions, prototype evaluations, and cross-functional engineering meetings.
- Prepare medical device documentation, design reports, validation summaries, design recommendations, and contribute to user manual development for clear product understanding and use.
