We are looking for an Head of Technical Underwriting - Liability based in Chicago or New York
Your Team:
The North American Liability team offers a wide range of liability insurance solutions. These include National Accounts Excess, Multinational, Reverse Flow, Environmental Liability and some Primary General Liability in the United States and Canada.
The Impact You Will Have:
Reporting to the Regional Head of Liability – Noth America, the Head of Technical Underwriting – Liability will lead an experienced team that provides underwriting guidance, planning and strategy development for Liability – North America. You and your team also provide data analytics to measure, analyze, illustrate and guide performance. You will participate in both the annual planning and reinsurance placement processes.
Some of your specific responsibilities could include:
Provide support for underwriters:
Act as a referral underwriter for complex, large risks.
- Support the strengthening of risk selection, risk assessment, and the appropriate application of coverage, exclusions, terms, and conditions.
- Support the upkeep, implementation, and articulation of underwriting guidelines, underwriting positions, and compliance rules.
- Support the underwriting training and referral process by partnering with underwriting leadership and technical stakeholders.
- Support the research, monitoring, and articulation of emerging trends on a regular basis to inform underwriting decisions.
Underwriting authority:
- Support the underwriting authority delegation process by assisting with clarity, simplification, distribution, and communication of underwriting guidelines and authority levels.
- Support the referral process to Global Product Group Leaders, including coordination, documentation, and followup as needed.
Underwriting quality:
- Support the coordination and execution of underwriting audit file reviews, including preparation for and participation in reinsurance audits.

- Support the development, communication, and tracking of strategies and action plans arising from audit findings, including measuring the effectiveness of implemented changes.
Communication with the Global Chief Underwriting Office:
- Support regular communication with global line of business leaders to promote consistency and alignment in underwriting practices.
- Support the dissemination of underwriting guideline updates and changes to ensure underwriters remain informed and aligned.
Underwriting training:
- Support continuous learning initiatives for underwriters related to new underwriting approaches, changes in underwriting rules, strategic direction, emerging trends, and compliance requirements..
Portfolio steering:
- Support the development, measurement, and refinement of underwriting strategies based on performance results, underwriting insights, and economic and market trends.
- Support the use of data analytics to inform book management decisions and underwriting shifts.
- Support the illustration and communication of portfolio management results using tools such as Excel, Salesforce, Foundry, and PowerPoint.
- Support crossfunctional projects and initiatives aimed at deepening the organization’s understanding of risk.
Pricing:
- Support the calibration and usability of pricing tools by assisting field underwriters in achieving accurate and consistent decisionmaking.
- Support assessments of pricing tool output quality to enhance precision and inform portfolio steering.
- Support pricing tool calibration efforts in collaboration with actuarial partners.
- Support the Head of Liability in evaluating and communicating target pricing guidance for underwriters.
Planning process:
- Support the annual financial planning process in collaboration with the Regional Head of Liability and the Global Chief Underwriting Office.
Reinsurance process:
- Support the coordination with internal stakeholders to gather data, documentation, and insights required for treaty submissions.
Compliance and product management oversight:
- Support adherence to form and rate filing requirements and promote proper usage across underwriting teams.
- Support communication to underwriters regarding changes in forms, regulations, or rating plans.
- Support collaboration with Legal and Compliance partners on product development and regulatory matters.
Operations Coordination:
- Support collaboration with operations leadership to coordinate underwriters and underwriting/technical assistants in the execution of underwriting support activities.
Underwriting Platform Management:
- Support coordination with system developers and technology partners related to electronic file documentation, pricing systems, data quality and entry improvements, analytics, frontdoor metrics, future global platforms, and systems training.
What You’ll Bring to the Role
- A minimum of 11 years of experience in Liability underwriting including inn-depth in knowledge of liability risks and training underwriters on risk selection/analysis;
Extensive experience as a referral underwriter;
- Experience with P&L planning for finance, with an ability to provide data, either on an ad hoc or regular basis, to other leaders in the company as well as reinsurers so that results and successful alignment are accurate and accessible;
- Well recognized long term relationship building with brokers at peer group level and within the local market;
- Significant experience in leadership and development of direct teams, including coaching, mentoring and developing team members and performance assessment;
- Experience with Praedicat on emerging trends, knowing when to update information in order to maintain underwriting guidelines and articulate changes to the underwriters;
- In-depth knowledge of pricing tool functionality, including how the tool works, assuring that the pricing tool is calibrated and providing accurate results and the ability to analyze the resulting data and create strategies that drive profitability;
- Ability to use all tools available including Salesforce, Excel and Power Point to illustrate the data analytics and performance of the team based upon the data;
- Extensive computer skills (MS Office);
- Ability to analyze highly complex data, from multiple sources, in detail, identifying and resolving issues before they transpire;
- Excellent written and verbal communications skills, with an ability to develop and positively influence key, strategic position holders across locations and functions;
- Ability to manage projects (milestone and task planning, managing resources, project controlling, monitoring, and reporting, moderation techniques) and to develop solutions while considering complex stakeholder structures and requirements;
- Ability to persuade and motivate others to act, without executive authority;
- Expertise in integrating AI into various business functions, enhancing efficiency, and fostering a culture of data-driven innovation is crucial; and
- Bachelor’s degree.

The annualized base pay range for this role is $160,000 - $250,000. The annual base salary range represents a nationwide market range. The actual salary for this position may be above and will be determined by a number of factors, including the scope, complexity and location of the role; the skills, education, training, credentials and experience of the candidate.
